    Background:

    • Creatine kinase isoenzyme BB (CK-BB) is detected in the serum of cancer patients.
    • Elevated CK-BB levels are observed in various malignancies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and significance of CK-BB in prostate cancer.
    • To evaluate CK-BB as a potential tumor marker for adenocarcinoma.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioimmunoassay and agarose electrophoresis were used to quantify serum CK-BB.
    • Immunoperoxidase staining assessed cytoplasmic CK-BB in tissues and effusions.

    Main Results:

    • Abnormal serum CK-BB levels were found in 15 of 17 untreated prostate carcinoma patients.
    • Increased serum CK-BB was noted in patients with other adenocarcinomas unresponsive to therapy.
    • CK-BB was present in epithelial cells of prostate tissue and malignant effusions; prostatic fluid showed high concentrations.

    Conclusions:

    • Glandular epithelial cells contain CK-BB, released in both benign and malignant conditions.
    • Elevated circulating CK-BB levels may indicate malignancy, particularly adenocarcinoma of the prostate.
    • CK-BB shows promise as a tumor marker, especially for prostate adenocarcinoma.
