    Background:

    • Sauromalus obesus, commonly known as the chuckwalla, inhabits arid environments with high ambient temperatures.
    • Effective thermoregulation is critical for reptilian survival in extreme heat.
    • Panting is a known evaporative cooling mechanism in some reptiles.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of panting as a thermoregulatory strategy in Sauromalus obesus.
    • To quantify the effect of panting on deep body temperature (T(C)) and brain temperature (T(B)).
    • To determine if panting provides differential cooling to the brain compared to the rest of the body.

    Main Methods:

    • Six adult Sauromalus obesus were subjected to an ambient temperature of 45 degrees C.
    • Deep body temperature (T(C)) and brain temperature (T(B)) were continuously monitored.
    • The reduction in T(C) and T(B) relative to ambient temperature was calculated during panting.

    Main Results:

    • Panting effectively maintained T(C) and T(B) below 45 degrees C for extended periods.
    • On average, T(C) was 0.9 degrees C lower, and T(B) was 2.7 degrees C lower than ambient temperature.
    • The brain experienced a significantly greater cooling effect from panting than the rest of the body.
