    Summary

    E. coli septicaemia can cause kidney failure and blood clotting issues. Heparin treatment showed mixed results in patients with E. coli-related disseminated intravascular coagulation and hemolytic uremic syndrome.

    Background:

    • Escherichia coli (E. coli) septicaemia is a serious bloodstream infection.
    • Oliguric renal failure and intravascular coagulation are potential severe complications.
    • Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia can co-occur with these conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the link between E. coli septicaemia, renal failure, and intravascular coagulation.
    • To evaluate the efficacy of heparin in managing E. coli-induced disseminated intravascular coagulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Observational study of eight patients with E. coli septicaemia and oliguric renal failure.
    • Hematological analysis to detect intravascular coagulation and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.
    • Administration of intravenous heparin to six patients to prevent fibrin deposition.

    Main Results:

    • All eight patients exhibited evidence of intravascular coagulation.
    • Five patients presented with microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.
    • Three of the six heparin-treated patients recovered fully; three died.

    Conclusions:

    • Disseminated intravascular coagulation is a significant factor in the complications of E. coli septicaemia.
    • Heparin therapy demonstrated variable outcomes in this patient cohort.
    • Further research is warranted to optimize treatment strategies for E. coli-induced coagulopathy.
