    Summary

    Hydroxyapatite (HOAp) crystals cause inflammation, but this is reduced in essential fatty acid-deficient rats and with heated HOAp. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) temporarily corrects this reduced inflammation, suggesting a membrane-based inflammatory mechanism.

    Background:

    • Hydroxyapatite (HOAp) crystals are known to induce inflammatory responses.
    • Prostaglandins (PGs) play a crucial role in mediating inflammation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of essential fatty acids (EFAs) and prostaglandins (PGs) in HOAp-induced inflammation.
    • To explore the effect of heat-treated HOAp crystals on inflammation.
    • To propose a new theory for crystal-induced inflammation.

    Main Methods:

    • Injection of HOAp crystals into rat footpads.
    • Comparison of inflammatory responses in normal rats versus EFA-deficient rats.
    • Assessment of inflammation using heated HOAp crystals.
