    Summary

The PathoTec Rapid I-D System accurately identifies most gram-negative bacilli within 4 hours. However, errors occurred with Proteus species due to false-positive hydrogen sulfide tests.

    Area of Science:

    • Clinical Microbiology
    • Bacterial Identification
    • Diagnostic Testing

    Background:

    • Accurate and rapid identification of gram-negative bacilli is crucial in clinical microbiology.
    • Traditional identification methods can be time-consuming.
    • The PathoTec Rapid I-D System offers a potentially faster alternative.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the accuracy and efficacy of the PathoTec Rapid I-D System.
    • To compare the system's biochemical test strips against standard identification methods.
    • To assess the system's performance in identifying gram-negative bacilli.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluation of 10 biochemical test strips from the PathoTec Rapid I-D System.
    • Comparison with standard microbiological tests.
    • Testing on a panel of 193 gram-negative bacilli isolates.

    Main Results:

    • High test agreement observed: 100% for oxidase and phenylalanine deaminase, 99% for indole, nitrate, and Voges-Proskauer.
    • Moderate to high agreement for malonate (98%), lysine decarboxylase (97%), urease (90%), and H2S (84%).
    • Lower agreement for esculin hydrolysis (75%); correct identification of most Enterobacteriaceae within 4 hours, with exceptions for Proteus species.

    Conclusions:

    • The PathoTec Rapid I-D System demonstrates good accuracy for most biochemical tests in identifying gram-negative bacilli.
    • The system allows for rapid identification, with most Enterobacteriaceae identified within 4 hours.
    • False-positive hydrogen sulfide results on PathoTec strips can lead to misidentification of certain Proteus species, necessitating further investigation.
