    Summary

    A short interval between transurethral resection and radiation therapy for prostate cancer can lead to severe prostatic calcification. Allowing a 6-week gap may prevent this complication.

    Background:

    • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a common procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia and can be used in conjunction with prostate cancer treatment.
    • Radiation therapy is a standard treatment for localized prostate cancer.

    Observation:

    • Three patients developed severe symptomatic prostatic calcification after undergoing TURP followed by radiation therapy within 2 to 4 weeks.

    Findings:

    • The observed complication suggests a link between the timing of TURP and subsequent radiation therapy.
    • A shorter interval (2-4 weeks) between TURP and radiation therapy appears to increase the risk of prostatic calcification.

    Implications:

    • Extending the interval between TURP and radiation therapy to 6 weeks may be a crucial preventative measure.
    • This finding could inform clinical guidelines for managing prostate cancer patients undergoing combined treatments.
