    Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) can exhibit endocrine differentiation. Argyrophilic cells and endocrine-like granules suggest BCC may occasionally show neuroendocrine features.

    Background:

    • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of human cancer.
    • The cellular origins and differentiation potential of BCC are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential for endocrine differentiation in basal cell carcinomas.
    • To identify specific cellular markers indicative of neuroendocrine features in BCC.

    Main Methods:

    • Histopathological examination of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) tissue samples.
    • Ultrastructural analysis to identify membrane-bound granules.
    • Staining for argyrophilic cells.

    • Argyrophilic cells were identified in 2 BCC cases.
    • Endocrine-like granules, characteristic of carcinoid tumors, were observed in 4 consecutive BCC cases.
