    Hepatic siderosis, characterized by excess iron in the liver, affects over half of British alcoholics studied. Significant liver iron (grades III and IV) was rare, occurring in 7% of patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence of hepatic siderosis in a population of British alcoholics with liver disease.
    • To investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption, iron intake, and the degree of hepatic siderosis.
    • To explore correlations between demographic factors (age, sex) and hepatic siderosis severity.

    Main Methods:

    • Study population: 157 British alcoholics (120 males, 37 females) with diagnosed liver disease.
    • Hepatic siderosis assessment: Staining for parenchymal iron to estimate iron levels.

    • Ethanol consumption and iron metabolism markers, not dietary iron from alcohol, are associated with significant hepatic siderosis.
