    Summary

    Maternal behavior in rats is normally suppressed by gonadal hormones like estrogen and testosterone. Long-term removal of these hormones is necessary to release the systems mediating maternal behavior.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of gonadal hormones in the regulation of maternal behavior in rats.
    • To determine the effect of long-term versus short-term gonadectomy on the onset of maternal behavior.
    • To explore the potential inhibitory influence of gonadal steroids on the maternal mediating system.

    • Virgin female rats were ovariectomized and tested for maternal behavior induction.
    • Different postoperative intervals (4 and 8 weeks) were used to assess the impact of hormone withdrawal duration.
