    Summary

    Smoking cessation temporarily alters visual evoked potentials, decreasing amplitude during abstinence and increasing it upon resuming smoking. These findings suggest smoking impacts arousal and sensory perception.

    Background:

    • Tobacco smoking is a widespread habit with known physiological effects.
    • Nicotine, the primary psychoactive component of tobacco, influences central nervous system activity.
    • Understanding the neurophysiological impact of smoking and withdrawal is crucial for addiction research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of smoking abstinence and resumption on visual evoked potentials (VEPs).
    • To explore the relationship between VEP changes and arousal levels in smokers.
    • To examine if smoking selectively modulates the perception of weak stimuli.

    Main Methods:

    • Electrophysiological recordings of averaged visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were obtained.
    • VEPs were measured in nine smokers during periods of 12 and 36 hours of abstinence.
