    Background:

    • Liver cell dysplasia involves cellular enlargement, nuclear abnormalities, and multinucleation in liver cells.
    • It is often found within cirrhotic nodules.
    • The Australia antigen (HAA), now known as Hepatitis B surface antigen, is a key factor in liver disease.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of liver cell dysplasia in Ugandan patients.
    • To determine the relationship between liver cell dysplasia, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and Hepatitis B virus infection.
    • To identify patients at high risk for hepatocellular carcinoma.

    Main Methods:

    • A study of 552 Ugandan patients with normal, cirrhotic, and cancerous livers.
    • Histopathological examination to identify liver cell dysplasia.
    • Correlation analysis with clinical data, including HAA status and liver cancer diagnosis.

    Main Results:

    • Liver cell dysplasia was rare in normal livers (1%) but frequent in cirrhosis (20.3%) and even more so in cirrhosis with cancer (64.5%).
    • Dysplasia was more common in males and associated with macronodular or mixed cirrhosis.
    • A strong association was found between dysplasia and HAA presence, suggesting a role in liver cancer development.

    Conclusions:

    • Liver cell dysplasia is a significant indicator of increased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma.
    • Patients with liver cell dysplasia, especially those with cirrhosis, require close monitoring.
    • Serial alpha-fetoprotein estimations are recommended for follow-up of these high-risk patients.
