    Summary

    Young male alcoholics frequently exhibit cerebellar atrophy, particularly in the vermis, detected via CT scans. This radiological finding is significantly more common than in non-alcoholic males, despite few clinical symptoms.

    Background:

    • Alcoholism is associated with neurological damage, but the extent of early-stage infratentorial changes is not fully understood.
    • Cerebellar atrophy is a known consequence of chronic alcohol abuse.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the infratentorial region using computed tomography (CT) in young male alcoholics.
    • To determine the prevalence of cerebellar atrophy in this demographic.
    • To compare radiological findings with clinical signs and a control group.

    Main Methods:

    • Controlled CT scan evaluation of the infratentorial region.
    • Inclusion of 41 male alcoholics under 35 years old.
    • Comparison with an age-matched control group of 40 non-alcoholic males.

    Main Results:

    • Twelve of 41 young male alcoholics showed cerebellar atrophy.
