    Summary

    Public swimming baths show high rates of tinea pedis (athlete's foot) and verruca (warts). Increased publicity on foot care is recommended to prevent the spread of these common infections among bathers.

    Background:

    • Public swimming baths are common recreational facilities.
    • Concerns exist regarding the transmission of superficial fungal and viral infections in communal aquatic environments.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of tinea pedis (athlete's foot) and verruca (warts) among users of a public swimming bath.
    • To assess the potential for transmission of these infections within the facility.
    • To provide recommendations for prevention.

    Main Methods:

    • A random 10% sample of bathers at a public swimming bath were examined.
    • Examinations specifically targeted the detection of tinea pedis and verruca.
    • Data on user precautions was also collected.

    • Overall incidence rates were 8.5% for tinea pedis and 4.8% for verruca.
