    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Gastroenterology
    • Cancer Screening

    Background:

    • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant public health concern.
    • Routine screening is crucial for early detection and improved outcomes.
    • Public awareness and participation in screening programs can be challenging.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate public willingness to use at-home colorectal screening kits.
    • To educate the public on the importance of CRC screening.
    • To assess the efficacy of a small-scale screening program in detecting CRC.

    Main Methods:

    • A voluntary screening program was conducted in North Carolina.
    • 1,204 individuals requested screening kits; 770 were returned.
    • Follow-up was conducted for positive test results.

    Main Results:

    • 3.7% (29) of tests were positive; 6 were negative after retesting.
    • Of 23 remaining positive results, 13 were attributed to non-cancerous causes (e.g., anal bleeding, aspirin use).
    • Five results were false positives; no polyps or carcinomas were detected.

    Conclusions:

    • The program increased public awareness of CRC screening importance.
    • At-home screening kits can be a valuable tool for public engagement.
    • Small-scale programs can effectively promote screening education, even without detecting new cancer cases.
