    Summary

    Selective IgA deficiency patients showed a higher incidence of hepatitis. This immune disorder may increase susceptibility to liver inflammation due to impaired immune responses.

    • Selective IgA deficiency is a primary immunodeficiency.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence of hepatitis in patients with selective IgA deficiency.

    • Immunelectrophoretic screening of 2,600 individuals.
    • Clinical observation of hepatitis development in identified patients.

    • Hepatitis was observed in 5 out of 12 patients with selective IgA deficiency.
    • This represents a previously unreported apparent increased susceptibility to hepatitis.

    Conclusions:

    • Selective IgA deficiency may be associated with an increased risk of hepatitis.
    • Defects in local and humoral immune mechanisms in IgA deficiency might contribute to this susceptibility.
