    Background:

    • M-mode echocardiography is widely used to assess left ventricular function.
    • The reliability of various echocardiographic indices for quantitative assessment is debated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To correlate multiple echocardiographic indices with angiographic ejection fraction (EF).
    • To evaluate the quantitative and qualitative reliability of these indices.

    Main Methods:

    • Compared echocardiographic ejection fraction (EF) using quadratic (Q) and cubic (C) formulae, percentage of minor axis shortening (%S), mean velocity of circumferential fiber shortening (mVCF), and peak VCF with angiographic EF.
    • Studied 37 subjects, including 10 normal individuals, with no segmental wall motion abnormalities.

    Main Results:

    • Significant linear correlations were observed between angiographic EF and EFc (r=0.78), %S (r=0.77), EFQ (r=0.68), peak VCF (r=0.68), and mVCF (r=0.58).
    • However, scatter was too large for reliable quantitative EF estimation from echo data.
    • Peak VCF demonstrated the highest sensitivity (92%) and specificity (92%) as a qualitative predictor.

    Conclusions:

    • Echocardiographic indices are reliable only as qualitative parameters of left ventricular function.
    • Peak VCF is the most sensitive and specific qualitative index currently available for assessing ventricular function.
