    Summary

Psychological distress, including depression and marital issues, may be linked to increased hair loss in women. Some women with diffuse alopecia showed significant hair shedding, unlike those with severe marital difficulties.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Dermatology
    • Trichology

    Background:

    • Diffuse alopecia is a common complaint among women.
    • The psychological factors influencing hair loss are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between psychological distress (marital difficulties, depression) and objective measures of hair loss in women presenting with diffuse alopecia.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 32 women with diffuse alopecia was assessed by a psychiatrist.
    • Daily hair loss and hair root counts (telogen counts) were measured and compared to control women.
    • Participants were evaluated for symptoms of depression and marital difficulties.

    Main Results:

    • Seven women with severe marital difficulties (2 overtly depressed) showed no significant difference in hair loss or telogen counts compared to controls.
    • The remaining 25 women experienced a significant increase in daily hair loss and telogen counts.
    • A correlation was observed between increased hair loss and psychological distress in the majority of cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Women experiencing diffuse alopecia with psychological distress, particularly depression and marital issues, may exhibit increased hair shedding.
    • Complaints of hair loss disproportionate to objective findings warrant psychiatric evaluation for underlying depression or marital discord.
    • Psychological interventions may be beneficial for managing hair loss in affected individuals.
