    Summary

    Taurine levels in heart muscle double in patients with chronic congestive heart failure and hypertensive rats. This elevation was specific to cardiac tissue, not seen in aortic or brain tissue.

    Background:

    • Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a complex cardiac condition.
    • Taurine is an amino acid found in high concentrations in cardiac muscle.
    • The role of taurine in cardiac pathology is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between taurine concentration and chronic congestive heart failure.
    • To examine taurine levels in cardiac and non-cardiac tissues under hypertensive conditions in an animal model.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparative analysis of left ventricular myocardial and aortic tissue taurine concentrations in human patients with and without CHF.
    • Induction of stress and observation of naturally occurring hypertension in rat models (Okamato strain).
    • Measurement of taurine concentrations in cardiac, skeletal muscle, and brain tissues of hypertensive and control rats.

    Main Results:

    • Human patients with CHF exhibited approximately double the concentration of taurine in left ventricular muscle compared to controls.
    • No significant difference in aortic tissue taurine levels was observed between the two human groups.
    • Stress-induced hypertension in rats led to increased cardiac taurine levels, with no significant alterations in skeletal muscle or brain taurine.
    • Spontaneously hypertensive rats showed elevated cardiac taurine levels compared to normotensive controls.

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated cardiac taurine concentration is associated with chronic congestive heart failure in humans.
    • Hypertension, both induced and spontaneous, leads to increased taurine levels specifically within the heart muscle.
    • Taurine accumulation in cardiac tissue may be a compensatory mechanism or a consequence of cardiac stress and pathology.
