    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the occurrence of gastrointestinal streaming using liquid and solid phase markers.
    • To compare marker throughput rates in healthy individuals versus patients with specific gastrointestinal conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Synchronous administration of polyethylene glycol (liquid marker) and chromium sesquioxide (solid marker).
    • Measurement of marker recovery rates in healthy volunteers, hospital inpatients, and patients with cholerrhoeic enteropathy or colonic diverticular disease.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in marker throughput was observed in healthy individuals or those with normal bowel habits, indicating no usual streaming.
    • In cholerrhoeic enteropathy, the liquid marker (polyethylene glycol) showed a 1.5x faster excretion rate than the solid marker.

    • Gastrointestinal streaming is not a common occurrence in individuals with normal bowel function.
    • Altered liquid and solid phase transit rates, indicative of streaming, are associated with cholerrhoeic enteropathy and colonic diverticular disease.
    • Colonic hypersegmentation may influence the relative distribution and transit of liquid and solid gastrointestinal contents.
