Varicocelectomy in patients with azoospermia.

    Surgical treatment for azoospermia associated with varicocele improved semen quality in 34% of men. Spermatozoa appeared in ejaculate post-surgery, leading to pregnancies in some cases.

    Background:

    • Varicocele is a common cause of male infertility.
    • Azoospermia, the absence of sperm in ejaculate, can be linked to varicocele.
    • Surgical correction of varicocele is a potential treatment for related infertility.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of surgical varicocele treatment in men with azoospermia.
    • To assess the impact of surgery on semen parameters and fertility.

    Main Methods:

    • Surgical treatment was performed on 33 men diagnosed with azoospermia and varicocele.
    • Testicular biopsy was conducted to assess spermatogenesis and identify underlying pathologies.
    • Semen analysis (spermiogram) was performed before and after surgery.

    • Testicular biopsy revealed Sertoli-cells-only syndrome in 9 men, degenerative changes in 6, decreased spermatogenesis in 15, and absent spermiogenesis in 3.
