    Summary

    Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients showed lower lymphocyte counts and T-cell stimulation. Complement component C3 levels were elevated in stable MS and fluctuated with disease activity.

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system.
    • Understanding immune system dysregulation in MS is crucial for developing effective treatments.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate peripheral blood immune cell function and complement levels in multiple sclerosis patients.
    • To correlate immune parameters with the clinical course of multiple sclerosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Longitudinal study of 22 MS patients and 21 controls over 1 year.
    • Stimulation of peripheral blood leucocytes with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and phytohaemagglutinin (PHA).
    • Assay of null and B cells using EA- and EAC-rosette formation; determination of serum C3 component of complement.
