    Summary

Skin tests using tuberculin and dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) in extremity sarcoma patients correlate with disease prognosis. A positive DNCB test indicated a more advanced disease stage and poorer survival outcomes.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Oncology
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Cell-mediated immunity plays a role in cancer prognosis.
    • Cutaneous hypersensitivity tests can assess immune function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To correlate tuberculin and dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) skin test results with disease extent and prognosis in extremity sarcoma patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Tuberculin and DNCB skin tests were administered to patients with extremity sarcoma.
    • Results were compared between tumor-bearing patients and controls, and across different disease stages and survival groups.

    Main Results:

    • 60% of sarcoma patients had positive tuberculin tests; 48.9% had positive DNCB tests (P < 0.03 vs. controls).
    • Tuberculin test positivity did not differ by stage, but DNCB positivity decreased with advanced stages (78.6%, 40.7%, 0%).
    • DNCB positivity was significantly lower in non-survivors (P < 0.04), suggesting a link to disease stage.

    Conclusions:

    • Dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) skin test results correlate with the stage of extremity sarcoma.
    • DNCB test positivity may serve as a prognostic indicator in sarcoma patients, reflecting disease burden.
