    Summary

    Plasma zinc levels change with age and sex, increasing in older men and decreasing in older women. While higher in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, zinc is not useful for diagnosing prostate cancer but may help exclude it.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between plasma zinc concentrations and age in men and women.
    • To determine if plasma zinc levels correlate with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate carcinoma.
    • To assess the utility of plasma zinc measurements in the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer.
