    Background:

    • Patients recovering from myocardial infarction (MI) require careful management of physical activity.
    • Understanding circulatory responses to different types of exertion is vital for safe rehabilitation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the blood pressure responses of male patients convalescing from MI to carrying a 15 kg weight using different methods.
    • To assess the impact of sustained handgrip exercise on blood pressure in this patient group.

    Main Methods:

    • 13 ambulant male patients post-MI participated.
    • Blood pressure was monitored while carrying a 15 kg weight in a shopping basket versus a rucksack.
    • A sustained handgrip test was performed on 8 patients.

    Main Results:

    • Carrying the 15 kg weight in hand significantly increased blood pressure.
    • Carrying the same weight on the back did not elicit a significant blood pressure increase.
    • Sustained handgrip exercise also resulted in a significant blood pressure elevation.

    Conclusions:

    • Static exercise, like carrying weight by hand or sustained handgrip, can cause significant blood pressure increases in post-MI patients.
    • Current rehabilitation advice may not adequately address the risks associated with sustained static exercise.
    • More specific guidance is needed to prevent potential circulatory complications during recovery.
