Maternal height and twinning.

G Corney, D Seedburgh, B Thompson

    Annals of Human Genetics

    Summary

Mothers of dizygotic (DZ) twins are taller than mothers of monozygotic (MZ) twins. This finding suggests a potential biological link between maternal height and twinning type, impacting twin studies.

    Area of Science:

    • Human genetics
    • Reproductive biology
    • Anthropometry

    Background:

    • Maternal height is a known factor influencing birth outcomes.
    • Previous research suggests potential differences in maternal characteristics between twin types.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate maternal height differences between mothers of monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins.
    • To compare maternal height in twin gestations with singleton gestations.

    Main Methods:

    • Data collected from 307 pairs of newborn twins of known zygosity in Oxford.
    • Additional data from 267 pairs of twins in Aberdeen and north-east Scotland.
    • Statistical analysis comparing maternal heights based on zygosity and singleton birth data.

    Main Results:

    • Mothers of DZ twins were found to be significantly taller than mothers of MZ twins.
    • Maternal height for MZ twin gestations was comparable to mothers of singletons.
    • Maternal height for DZ twin gestations was notably greater than mothers of singletons.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings support the hypothesis that maternal height is associated with twinning type.
    • Elevated maternal height may be a contributing factor to dizygotic twinning.
    • These results have implications for understanding the biological underpinnings of twinning.
