Autoimmune chorioretinitis in rhesus monkeys.

    Summary

Injecting monkeys with monkey retinal tissue caused ocular lesions, including choroiditis and retinal vessel sheathing. Other tissues like bovine retina were ineffective in inducing these specific eye conditions.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Immunology
    • Retinal Research

    Background:

    • Autoimmune responses can target ocular tissues.
    • Understanding the immunogenicity of retinal antigens is crucial for studying ocular inflammation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential of monkey retinal tissue as an immunogen for inducing experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) in primates.
    • To characterize the resulting ocular lesions and compare the efficacy of different tissue preparations.

    Main Methods:

    • Monkeys were injected with monkey retinal tissue emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant.
    • Ocular examinations were performed to assess lesion development.
    • Control tissues (bovine retina, monkey choroid plexus, guinea pig kidney) were tested for comparative immunogenicity.

    Main Results:

    • Injection of monkey retinal tissue induced significant ocular lesions.
    • Lesions were characterized by choroiditic patches in the fundus periphery.
    • Retinal vessel sheathing was also observed.
    • Control tissues did not induce similar ocular lesions.

    Conclusions:

    • Monkey retinal tissue, when emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant, is effective in inducing experimental autoimmune uveitis in monkeys.
    • The induced lesions specifically target the choroid and retinal vasculature.
    • This model provides a valuable tool for studying autoimmune eye diseases.
