    Summary

    Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may disrupt the blood-brain barrier due to increased blood pressure. Cognitive function impairment after ECT strongly correlated with systolic blood pressure rise during treatment in depressed patients.

    Background:

    • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment most often used for patients with severe major depression or bipolar disorder that has not responded to other treatments.
    • Evidence suggests ECT may induce a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
    • This breakdown is hypothesized to be linked to the significant increase in blood pressure (BP) during ECT procedures.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between ECT-induced blood pressure changes and cognitive function.
    • To determine if the rise in systolic blood pressure during ECT correlates with cognitive impairment.

    • Cognitive function was assessed using the Benton test before and three hours after ECT.
