Rickettsial antibodies in multiple sclerosis.

E J Field, M Chambers

    British Medical Journal
    |January 3, 1970
    PubMed
    Summary

This study found no significant difference in antibodies to rickettsial antigens between multiple sclerosis patients and healthy individuals. Therefore, a rickettsial cause for multiple sclerosis is unlikely.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Immunology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic degenerative neurological disease.
    • Previous research has explored potential infectious etiologies for MS, including rickettsial infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between rickettsial antigens and multiple sclerosis (MS).
    • To evaluate the potential of rickettsial infections as a cause of MS.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples from patients with MS and other degenerative neurological diseases were analyzed.
    • Serum samples from normal controls were also analyzed.
    • Antibody levels to several rickettsial antigens were measured and compared between groups.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference was observed in antibody content to rickettsial antigens between MS patients and normal controls.
    • The study found no statistically significant correlation between rickettsial antigens and degenerative neurological diseases.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings do not support a rickettsial etiology for multiple sclerosis.
    • There is insufficient evidence to warrant further clinical trials of antibiotic treatments for MS based on a rickettsial cause.
