    Summary

Home peritoneal dialysis offers an acceptable alternative to hemodialysis for selected patients, maintaining clinical improvement without significant changes in key biochemical markers. Patients demonstrated independence and improved quality of life.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Internal Medicine
    • Renal Replacement Therapy

    Background:

    • Home peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a crucial renal replacement therapy.
    • Evaluating long-term outcomes and patient independence in PD is essential.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the efficacy and patient outcomes of home peritoneal dialysis over two years.
    • To determine the impact of PD on biochemical markers, nutritional status, and patient independence.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective study of twenty patients undergoing home peritoneal dialysis for two years.
    • Data collection included biochemical markers (serum urea, creatinine, calcium, albumin), weight, transfusion requirements, peritonitis episodes, and patient functional status.

    Main Results:

    • Patients showed clinical improvement, but serum urea and creatinine levels remained unchanged after 12 months.
    • Weight and serum albumin levels were constant; only one patient developed hyperparathyroidism.
    • The incidence of peritonitis was 0.58% (20 episodes), and most patients achieved independence in daily living and work.
    • Four patients died from causes unrelated to PD.

    Conclusions:

    • Home peritoneal dialysis is a viable and acceptable alternative to hemodialysis for selected patients.
    • PD can lead to improved patient independence and quality of life with manageable complication rates.
