    Background:

    • Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is an autoimmune blistering skin condition.
    • Splenic dysfunction is a potential extraintestinal manifestation of DH.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and degree of splenic atrophy in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis.
    • To assess splenic function using red blood cell clearance.
    • To explore correlations between splenic abnormalities and clinical/laboratory findings in DH.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized splenic scans to evaluate splenic size and morphology.
    • Assessed splenic function by measuring the clearance rate of (51)Cr-labelled heat-damaged red blood cells.
    • Investigated 24 patients diagnosed with dermatitis herpetiformis.

    • Eight out of 24 patients exhibited definite splenic atrophy.

    • Splenic atrophy is a common finding in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, even in those with normal red blood cell clearance.
    • The study suggests a potential link between DH and splenic dysfunction, independent of intestinal involvement or specific treatments.
