    Background:

    • Manic-depressive illness, now known as bipolar disorder, is a mood disorder characterized by shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels.
    • Electrooculography (EOG) measures the electrical potential difference between the cornea and retina, reflecting eye movements.
    • Previous research has suggested potential links between mood disorders and ocular motor function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate electrooculographic (EOG) differences in patients with depression and mania compared to healthy controls.
    • To assess the effect of pharmacological treatment on EOG parameters in these patient groups.
    • To explore the potential neuroendocrine and dopaminergic mechanisms underlying observed EOG changes in bipolar disorder.

    Main Methods:

    • Electrooculography (EOG) was performed on 20 patients with depression (12 retarded, 8 agitated) and 12 manic patients.
