    Background:

    • The ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) is implicated in regulating motivated behaviors.
    • Its precise role in both positive reinforcement and punishment systems remains under investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the function of the ventromedial hypothalamus in reward and aversion.
    • To determine the relationship between the electrical stimulation threshold for bar pressing and thresholds for other motivated behaviors.

    Main Methods:

    • Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to press a bar for electrical brain stimulation.
    • Behavioral thresholds for initiating self-stimulation, stopping feeding, and escaping prolonged stimulation were measured at the same electrode site in the VMH.
