    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Clinical Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Glaucoma management often involves combination therapy.
    • Timolol is a commonly used beta-blocker in glaucoma treatment.

    Observation:

    • Adverse effects were reported in 38 out of 165 patients (23%) receiving timolol as an addition to their glaucoma regimen.
    • These effects impacted one or more organ systems.

    Findings:

    • Discontinuation of timolol was required for 15 patients (9%) due to the severity of adverse events.
    • The specific relationship between timolol and these adverse effects requires further investigation.

    Implications:

    • Careful monitoring for systemic side effects is crucial when adding timolol to glaucoma treatment.
    • Further double-masked studies are needed to confirm timolol's role in observed adverse events.
