    Summary

    Fluorometholone may increase intraocular pressure (IOP) more often than previously thought. This study found a significant number of corticosteroid responders experienced elevated IOP when treated with fluorometholone eye drops.

    Background:

    • Corticosteroids are used to treat ocular inflammation.
    • Fluorometholone is a corticosteroid with a reported low propensity for increasing intraocular pressure (IOP).
    • Clinical observations suggested a potentially higher incidence of IOP elevation with fluorometholone than previously documented.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence and magnitude of IOP response to 0.1% fluorometholone suspension.
    • To evaluate fluorometholone's effect on IOP in patients known to be responsive to corticosteroids.

    Main Methods:

    • A study involving 43 patients.
    • Patients were pre-screened for responsiveness to 0.1% dexamethasone sodium phosphate solution.
    • The IOP response to 0.1% fluorometholone suspension was monitored.

    • 60.5% of patients (26 out of 43) experienced an IOP increase of 5 mm Hg or more.
    • 7% of patients (3 out of 43) showed IOP rises exceeding 15 mm Hg.

    Conclusions:

    • Fluorometholone can cause significant intraocular pressure increases.
    • The incidence of IOP elevation with fluorometholone may be higher than previously reported, particularly in corticosteroid-sensitive individuals.
