Atopic disease and dermatitis herpetiformis.

M G Davies, R Fifield, R Marks

    The British Journal of Dermatology
    |October 1, 1979
    PubMed
    Summary

Patients with dermatitis herpetiformis show a higher risk of atopic disorders, including atopic eczema. However, serum immunoglobulin levels, including IgE, were normal in these patients, suggesting no underlying immune deficiency.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Immunology
    • Allergy

    Background:

    • Dermatitis herpetiformis is a chronic autoimmune blistering skin condition.
    • Atopic disorders encompass conditions like atopic eczema, asthma, and allergic rhinitis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between dermatitis herpetiformis and atopic disorders.
    • To assess serum immunoglobulin levels in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis.

    Main Methods:

    • A case-control study comparing dermatitis herpetiformis patients with a matched control group.
    • Statistical analysis to determine the significance of observed differences in atopic disorder incidence.
    • Measurement of serum immunoglobulin levels, including immunoglobulin E (IgE), in dermatitis herpetiformis patients.

    Main Results:

    • A statistically significant increase in the incidence of atopic disorders was observed in dermatitis herpetiformis patients compared to controls.
    • Atopic eczema showed a particularly significant increase in incidence among dermatitis herpetiformis patients.
    • No significant abnormalities were detected in the serum immunoglobulin levels of the studied dermatitis herpetiformis patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Dermatitis herpetiformis patients have a higher predisposition to developing atopic disorders.
    • The increased incidence of atopic disorders in dermatitis herpetiformis is not associated with detectable serum immunoglobulin abnormalities.
