    Summary

    This study compared hemodynamic responses to exercise in supine versus sitting positions in healthy males. Heart rate increased more, while cardiac output and stroke volume were similar when transitioning from rest to exercise in both positions.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize hemodynamic profiles at rest and during bicycle exercise in healthy males.
    • To compare hemodynamic responses in supine versus sitting positions during rest and exercise.

    Main Methods:

    • Fifty healthy males underwent hemodynamic measurements (heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output, etc.) at rest and during bicycle exercise.
    • Hemodynamics were assessed in both supine and sitting positions in a subset of nine subjects.

    Main Results:

    • In the supine position, exercise increased heart rate, mean arterial pressure, pulmonary arterial pressure, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, and cardiac output.
    • Compared to the supine position, the sitting position showed higher heart rate but lower pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, cardiac output, stroke volume, and left ventricular stroke work at rest and during exercise.

    Conclusions:

    • Body position influences hemodynamic parameters at rest and during exercise.
    • While heart rate is higher and filling pressures are lower when sitting, the overall cardiovascular response to exercise is comparable between supine and sitting positions.
