    Summary

    Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) do not have more immediate allergic reactions to penicillin, despite higher reported histories of reactions. Skin tests showed no increased risk for IgE-mediated penicillin allergies in SLE patients.

    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease.
    • Patients with SLE often report adverse reactions to medications, including penicillin.
    • The risk of IgE-mediated penicillin allergy in SLE patients is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of positive immediate-type skin tests to penicillin antigens in patients with SLE.
    • To compare penicillin skin test reactivity between SLE patients and non-SLE controls.
    • To determine if SLE patients have an increased risk of IgE-mediated allergic reactions to penicillin.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparison of immediate-type skin test results to penicillin antigens between SLE patients and hospitalized controls without SLE.
