    Background:

    • Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare, progressive neurological disease.
    • Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a common viral illness caused by Epstein-Barr virus.

    Observation:

    • Three pediatric cases of coincidental SSPE and IM are presented.
    • In two cases, IM symptoms preceded SSPE onset.
    • One SSPE case was linked to mononucleosis encephalitis.

    Findings:

    • All three patients exhibited pathological changes characteristic of SSPE and elevated measles antibody levels.
    • Two patients showed T-cell abnormalities, indicating potential IM-associated immunosuppression.
    • All patients died within three months of SSPE diagnosis.

    Implications:

    • The findings suggest a possible association between IM and SSPE in children.
    • IM-induced immunosuppression may play a role in SSPE development.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the relationship between these two conditions.
