    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of breath carbon monoxide (CO) analyzers in smoking cessation programs.
    • To determine the correlation between self-reported cigarette consumption and measured breath CO levels.
    • To assess the impact of smoking abstinence on breath CO concentrations.

    Main Methods:

    • Employed a 90-second CO-determination method for breath analysis.
    • Recruited participants who were current smokers.
    • Collected self-reported data on daily cigarette consumption and periods of abstinence.

    • CO monitoring can be used for surveillance or providing participants with immediate feedback on smoking status.
    • Feedback-based CO monitoring is likely to yield the greatest benefits for individuals attempting to quit smoking.
