Scanning electron microscopy of intact Trichoderma colonies.

E Galun

    Journal of Bacteriology
    |November 1, 1971

    Summary

Scanning electron microscopy clearly distinguished fungal hyphal types and enabled early detection of hyphal initiation. This technique allowed for the study of photoinduced differentiation stages leading to conidiation in Trichoderma.

    Area of Science:

    • Mycology
    • Microscopy
    • Cell Biology

    Background:

    • Fungal morphology and development are crucial for understanding species identification and life cycles.
    • Photoinduced differentiation is a key developmental process in certain fungi, influencing reproduction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the utility of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for differentiating fungal hyphal types.
    • To examine early stages of hyphal initiation and photoinduced differentiation in Trichoderma.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to visualize fungal structures.
    • Observed and analyzed hyphal morphology and developmental stages.

    Main Results:

    • SEM provided clear distinctions between different hyphal types.
    • Early hyphal initiation was readily detectable using SEM.
    • SEM facilitated the study of photoinduced differentiation leading to conidiation in Trichoderma.

    Conclusions:

    • Scanning electron microscopy is an effective tool for fungal hyphal characterization.
    • SEM enables detailed observation of fungal development, including photoinduced differentiation.
