Abstract:
This paper reviews current concepts of mammalian keratinization using human epidermis as an example. It is the essence of the report that biochemical data on keratinization processes are so scanty that most concepts are based on morphologic information. Recent electron microscopic contributions extending these concepts are useful only in a limited sense for comparison with the descriptions of some heritable abnormalities affecting keratinous epidermal structures.
