    Summary

    Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) tablets improved cervical ripeness before labor induction in women. While effective, longer administration may yield better results without significant side effects.

    Background:

    • Cervical ripeness is crucial for successful labor induction.
    • Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is a commonly used agent for cervical ripening.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of 1.0 mg PGE2 tablets in improving cervical ripeness prior to labor induction.
    • To assess the safety and side effects of PGE2 administration in this context.

    Main Methods:

    • Seventy-three women (primigravidas and multigravidas) received 1.0 mg PGE2 tablets hourly for 5 doses.
    • Cervical ripeness was assessed based on an initial cervical score.

    Main Results:

    • The overall response to PGE2 treatment was dependent on the initial cervical score.
    • Gastrointestinal side effects were infrequent.
    • No complications were observed for mother or fetus.

    Conclusions:

    • The used PGE2 protocol significantly improved cervical favorability.
    • Prolonged PGE2 administration may potentially lead to enhanced cervical ripening.
    • PGE2 appears to be a safe option for cervical ripening before labor induction.
