    Background:

    • Myocardial infarction (MI) diagnosis often follows the manifestation of acute symptoms.
    • Prodromal symptoms preceding MI are increasingly recognized but not consistently managed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of unusual symptoms experienced by patients in the two months preceding a myocardial infarction diagnosis.
    • To assess patient and physician response to these prodromal symptoms.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey of 180 hospitalized patients with confirmed myocardial infarction.
    • Questionnaires focused on unusual symptoms experienced in the two months prior to diagnosis.

    Main Results:

    • 68% of patients reported prodromal symptoms, with 55% experiencing new or intensified chest pain.
    • 13% reported other symptoms such as fatigue or breathlessness.
    • Only 36 of 122 patients with prodromal symptoms consulted doctors, and 14 received only reassurance.

    Conclusions:

    • A significant proportion of myocardial infarction cases are preceded by recognizable symptoms.
    • Improved physician training in recognizing early coronary heart disease symptoms and further research into prophylactic regimens are crucial.
    • Public education on recognizing coronary symptoms is needed to facilitate timely medical consultation.
