Background:

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human cancer.
The phenomenon of spontaneous tumor regression is recognized but not well-studied in BCC.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of spontaneous regression in basal cell carcinomas.

Main Methods:

Histopathological analysis of 400 randomly selected basal cell carcinoma samples.
Assessment for evidence of previous and active spontaneous regression.

Main Results:

Evidence of previous spontaneous regression was identified in 6% of BCC cases.
An additional 14% of BCCs showed foci of active regression, characterized by lymphocytic infiltrate and tumor cell apoptosis.
