    Summary

    This study explored how irrational beliefs relate to psychological needs. While some irrational beliefs were linked to needs, they couldn't easily predict pathological behavior, supporting Ellis's personality model.

    Background:

    • Irrational beliefs are a core concept in cognitive behavioral therapies.
    • Murray's theory describes fundamental human psychological needs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between irrational beliefs and 15 psychological needs.
    • To examine the predictive power of irrational beliefs for pathological behavior.
    • To provide further validation for Albert Ellis's model of personality.

    Main Methods:

    • Administered the Irrational Beliefs Test (IBT) and Adjective Check List (ACL).
    • Sample included 46 high school students and 50 adults.
    • Utilized stepwise multiple regression analyses.

    Main Results:

    • Five scales of the IBT and the IBT Full-Scale showed significant associations with psychological needs.
    • No strong predictive link was found between irrational beliefs and pathological behavior.

    Conclusions:

    • Irrational beliefs are associated with specific psychological needs.
    • Pathological behavior is not readily predictable solely from irrational beliefs.
    • Findings offer additional empirical support for Ellis's personality model.
