    Summary

    Dopamine does not affect lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure in humans. This study found no change in LES pressure after administering dopamine, suggesting it does not increase gastroesophageal reflux risk.

    Background:

    • Dopamine is known to decrease lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure in American opossums.
    • The effect of dopamine on LES pressure in humans has not been previously established.
    • Lower esophageal sphincter pressure is a key factor in maintaining gastroesophageal sphincter competence.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of two different dosages of dopamine on lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure in healthy human volunteers.
    • To determine if clinically relevant doses of dopamine predispose individuals to gastroesophageal reflux.

    Main Methods:

    • A study involving ten healthy volunteers.
    • Pullthrough manometry was used to measure lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure.
    • Two dosages of dopamine (1 mcg.kg-1 body weight.minute-1 and 5 mcg.kg-1 body weight.minute-1) were administered.
    • Normal saline solution was used as a control.

    Main Results:

    • Neither dopamine administration nor the control (normal saline) resulted in a significant change in lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure.
