Survival of Ureaplasma urealyticum on different kinds of swabs
Journal of Clinical Microbiology
|October 1, 1979
Abstract:
The survival of Ureaplasma urealyticum on five different types of swabs routinely used for obtaining clinical specimens is limited to 1 h. Wooden applicator sticks inhibit the alkaline color change in broth and result in a significant loss of isolates if broth alone is used.
Insights
Ureaplasma urealyticum survival on clinical specimen swabs is limited to one hour. Wooden swabs interfere with detection methods, causing significant isolate loss when using broth alone.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Clinical Diagnostics
Background:
- Ureaplasma urealyticum is a common bacterium found in clinical specimens.
- Accurate detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum relies on appropriate specimen collection and transport methods.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the survival of Ureaplasma urealyticum on various swab types.
- To assess the impact of different swabs on Ureaplasma urealyticum detection in broth.
Main Methods:
- Testing survival of Ureaplasma urealyticum on five common swab types over time.
- Evaluating the effect of wooden applicator sticks on alkaline color change in broth.
Main Results:
- Ureaplasma urealyticum survival was limited to 1 hour on all tested swab types.
- Wooden applicator sticks significantly inhibited the alkaline color change in broth.
- Using broth alone with wooden swabs led to a substantial loss of Ureaplasma urealyticum isolates.
Conclusions:
- Standard swab types provide limited survival time for Ureaplasma urealyticum specimens.
- Wooden swabs negatively impact Ureaplasma urealyticum detection assays, particularly those using broth.
- Careful selection of swabs and transport media is crucial for accurate Ureaplasma urealyticum diagnosis.
