Pulmonary risk factors in surgery.

E Harman, G Lillington

The Medical Clinics of North America
    |November 1, 1979

    Summary

Postoperative pulmonary complications are common after general anesthesia and surgery due to altered lung function. Identifying and managing risk factors can significantly reduce their incidence and surgical risk.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonary Medicine
    • Anesthesiology
    • Thoracic Surgery

    Background:

    • General anesthesia and surgery alter lung ventilation patterns and volumes.
    • These changes increase the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications.
    • Several identifiable and reversible risk factors contribute to these complications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To highlight the importance of identifying and managing risk factors for postoperative pulmonary complications.
    • To inform therapeutic strategies aimed at reducing complication incidence.
    • To assess surgical risk in patients undergoing thoracic surgery, particularly lung resections.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of factors influencing postoperative pulmonary function.
    • Identification of key risk factors associated with pulmonary complications.
    • Evaluation of risk quantification for thoracic surgery patients.

    Main Results:

    • Altered ventilation and reduced lung volumes are primary contributors to complications.
    • Many risk factors are modifiable, allowing for preventative interventions.
    • Risk factor assessment is crucial for determining surgical candidacy and tolerance for lung resection.

    Conclusions:

    • Proactive management of risk factors can significantly decrease serious postoperative pulmonary complications.
    • Thorough risk assessment is essential for optimizing outcomes in thoracic surgery patients.
    • Identifying high-risk individuals prevents prohibitive surgical risks and intolerance to lung resection.
