    Background:

    • Methane sulfonylfluoride (MSF) is an organofluorine compound.
    • Understanding the toxicological profile of MSF is crucial for assessing potential health risks.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of sub-chronic exposure to methane sulfonylfluoride (MSF) in male and female rats.
    • To evaluate the impact of MSF on general health, cholinesterase activity, and fluoride accumulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats were exposed to 20 or 100 ppb of MSF for 61 exposures of 7 hours each.
    • Parameters assessed included appearance, behavior, weight gain, food consumption, plasma and RBC cholinesterase activity, and tissue fluoride levels.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in appearance, behavior, weight gain, or food consumption between control and MSF-exposed groups.
    • Plasma cholinesterase activity remained unaffected.
    • A significant depression in red blood cell (RBC) cholinesterase was noted in both male and female rats exposed to the higher MSF concentration.
    • No significant accumulation of fluoride was detected in the liver or blood.

    Conclusions:

    • Sub-chronic exposure to MSF at 20 and 100 ppb can depress RBC cholinesterase activity in rats.
    • MSF exposure does not lead to systemic fluoride accumulation in the liver or blood under these conditions.
    • Further research may be warranted to elucidate the mechanism of RBC cholinesterase inhibition by MSF.
