Effects of light, temperature, and pH value on aflatoxin production in vitro
Applied Microbiology
|September 1, 1969
Abstract:
In the complete absence of light, an isolate of Aspergillus flavus produced up to 170,000 pg aflatoxin per g, whereas the incubation of the fungus in light caused a reduction (35,000 pg/g) of the toxin synthesis.
Insights
Light exposure significantly reduces aflatoxin production in Aspergillus flavus. This fungus synthesized high levels of aflatoxin in darkness but much lower amounts when incubated in light.
Area of Science:
- Mycology
- Food Science
- Toxicology
Background:
- Aflatoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by Aspergillus species.
- Contamination of food and feed with aflatoxins poses significant health risks.
- Environmental factors influencing aflatoxin biosynthesis are crucial for risk assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effect of light on aflatoxin production by Aspergillus flavus.
- To quantify the reduction in aflatoxin synthesis under light exposure.
Main Methods:
- Culturing an isolate of Aspergillus flavus in complete darkness.
- Incubating the same fungal isolate under light conditions.
- Quantifying aflatoxin levels produced per gram of fungal culture using pg/g measurements.
Main Results:
- Aspergillus flavus produced high levels of aflatoxin (up to 170,000 pg/g) in the complete absence of light.
- Incubation in light resulted in a substantial reduction of aflatoxin synthesis (down to 35,000 pg/g).
Conclusions:
- Light exposure is a critical factor that significantly inhibits aflatoxin biosynthesis in Aspergillus flavus.
- Harnessing light conditions could be a potential strategy for controlling aflatoxin contamination.
